Bringing Together Buddhism and Progressive Social Action

Founded in 1978, the Buddhist Peace Fellowship's mission is to serve as an expression and agent for socially engaged Buddhism. We are guided by principles which recognize the interdependence of all beings, and the importance of using non-violent means to meet suffering with compassion.

Drawing on the teachings of the Buddha, as well as numerous other ancient and contemporary Buddhist masters in many diverse Buddhist traditions, we strive to bring peace where there is conflict and alleviate suffering whenever possible. The Buddhist Peace Fellowship seeks to address issues of peace and war, human rights, systemic violence, economic justice, and environmental sustainability.

"As a mother would risk her life to protect her only child, even so one should cultivate a limitless heart with regard to all beings. With goodwill for the entire cosmos, cultivate a limitless heart: above, below, and all around, unobstructed, without hostility or hate. Whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, as long as one is alert, one should be resolved on this mindfulness. This is called a sublime abiding here and now."

The Buddha, from Sutta Nipata 1.8
